Info
Vessels of Imperfection is a collection of aluminium cast vessels that embrace the imperfections occurring during the process of metal casting. Rather than removing the seams and flaws of the cast object, they are highlighted and made a focal point.
The series was realised with the help of Martin Petermann, a craftsman in Vienna, who shared his knowledge of the craft with Anna. Over nine months, the two experimented with and questioned known methods in the metal casting craft. The result is Vessels of Imperfection, a collection that embodies a harmonious blend of traditional craftsmanship and an intuitive, process-driven approach.
Each piece was made using the method of sand casting. This requires both an upper and lower box, entirely filled with sand. To cast in a sand mould, a casting model is moulded in sand, then removed leaving a void that is cast with molten metal. The interface between the two mould halves culminates in a distinctive seam, a consequence of the excess
material that is typically sanded away but here deliberately kept and embraced as a unique feature.
